In the west of the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui is a tropical island located in Thailand’s Surat Thani Province. The town of Surat Thani is beside the island on the coast of the Kra Isthmus.

Geographic Features of Koh Samui, Thailand’s Landscape

Coastline – Whilst some of the coast of the island is developed, much is natural with sandy beaches. Some of the coastline does not have beaches, but just banks with jungle above and water below. Secluded inlets and coves are found along the shore around the island.

Forest – The lush and dense rainforests of Koh Samui are habitats for native wildlife. The island has coconut trees and numerous tropical plants.

Gulf of Thailand – The country of Thailand secludes this vast body of water from the rest of the South China Sea. The island of Koh Samui is sitting on the western side of the gulf.

Mountains – Mountains at heights of over 600 metres cover much of Koh Samui. These rugged slops are covered with thick rainforest growth and vegetation.

Waterfalls – Streams trickle down from the mountains and form myriads of cascading waterfalls around the island of Koh Samui.
