A major city in northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is situated on the Ping River. The modern Thailand city is Chiang Mai Province’s capital.

Canal – The old city is a square surrounded by a wall and mote. This canal is still well-kept today.
Mountains – The mountains in the region where Chiang Mai rests are mainly wooded with rainforest. Some of the mountains reach heights of 1,600 metres above sea level. Much of the region is protected in areas such as the Suthep National Park. Trails pass through these peaks and they are used for trekking and mountain biking.
Ping River – From the Chao Phraya River, the Ping River is a significant contributor. The city of Chiang Mai is built on this river, and it is the watercourse that passes through Mae Ping National Park. The Ping starts in the Doi Chiang Dao district.
Rainforest – Lush rainforest is found all around the metropolis. Banyan trees are among the native tree species in the jungle forests.
Waterfalls – Inside the city limits of Chiang Mai and around the area are found numerous waterfalls. These are connected to mountain streams and brooks flowing down from the mountain slopes.
